What year were the Christians officially given the title "The Catholic Church"? And why were we given this name?

The earliest recorded use of the word "Catholic" applied to the Church that I know of is in the writings of St. Ignatius of Antioch in 107AD.
The word "catholic" is from the Greek word that means "universal" in both time and place.
The Church is called "catholic" because She is for all people, in all times, and in all places. The Church we are members of today is the same Church that St. Francis was in in the middle ages and that St. Augustine was in in the Patristic era and that Our Lord founded and had its start at Pentecost in St. Peter and the Apostles.

Hi Tony,
You could probably do a few PhD theses on the issue.
The Catholic Answers tract on the issue (http://www.catholic.com/library/Eastern_Orthodoxy.asp) gives a good outline.
