Does the name Mary mean anything ? Was this what the people actually called her?

In Aramaic and Hebrew it was Maryam, what it means in those languages I am not sure of.
Any other takers on this question?

"Miryam" (or "Maryam") is thought to have Egyptian origins as well as Hebrew.
The meaning of the name in Aramaic is disputed, but it is thought to translate to "sea of tears" or "sea of bitterness" when you hyphenate the name (mir-yam; mar: "bitter"; yam: "sea"). It has also been suggested that the name translates to "wished for child".
In its Egyptian form the name may have been derived from the words "myr" or "mr" which mean "beloved" or "love" respectively.
