Does anyone have any tips on how to improve ones memory?

I have a terribly memory, but only for technical details. I remember stories, but never things like dates, numbers, chapter and verse, page numbers etc.

No, seriously.

For example, when quoting Bible chapters and verses, I often get the two the wrong way around, or I say something is from the 1st Letter to someone when it is from the 2nd or visa versa.
