What happens to the soul of someone who dies as a martyr but was in a state of mortal sin?

If it was truly an act of martyrdom out of love for God that would be an act of perfect contrition. Such an act of great love and mortal sin can not exist together.

That's right.
"Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." St. John 15:13
If we lay down our life for God we cold show Him no greater love.
Think of sin as placing something (money, lust, sloth, pride, possessions, etc etc) ahead of our love for God.
The act of martyrdom is a most radical way we can turn our back on our sins.
