Even though you possess plenty, you are still indigent. You abound in temporal possessions, but you need things eternal. You listen to the needs of a human beggar, yet yourself are a beggar of God. What you do with those who beg from you is what God will do with His beggar. You are filled and you are empty. Fill your empty neighbor with your fullness, so that your emptiness may be filled from God's fullness.
    - St. Augustine of Hippo

Endeavour not to miss Holy Communion. We can scarcely give our enemy, the devil, greater joy than when we withdraw from Jesus, who takes away the power the enemy has over us.

Pride inflates man; envy consumes him; avarice makes him restless; anger rekindles his passions; gluttony makes him ill; comfort destroys him; lies imprison him; murder defiles him... the very pleasures of sin become instruments of punishment in the hands of God.

Take a moment to think of everything you're proud of about yourself and your life. Then ask yourself if you would have any of this without God's permission and aid? Give credit where credit is due; praise and thank Him, not yourself.
    - St. Francis of Assisi

Prayer ought to be humble, fervent, resigned, persevering, and accompanied with great reverence. One should consider that he stands in the presence of a God, and speaks with a Lord before whom the angels tremble from awe and fear.

Finally, true freedom is not advanced in the permissive society, which confuses freedom with license to do anything whatever and which in the name of freedom proclaims a kind of general amorality. It is a caricature of freedom to claim that people are free to organize their lives with no reference to moral values, and to say that society does not have to ensure the protection and advancement of ethical values. Such an attitude is destructive of freedom and peace.
    - Pope John Paul II

An unclean soul is synonymous with a heart full of frivolity. Humility and purity of conduct are the wings which raise us up to God and in a manner deify us. Remember this: The sinner who is ashamed to do evil is closer to God than the upright man who is ashamed to do good.
    - Saint Pio of Pietrelcina

Faced with an increasingly secularized culture, every baptized person must become active in the Church's missionary activity.” [I] "invite local Churches on all continents to a joint awareness of the urgent need to re-launch missionary activity to meet the many grave challenges of our time”. … The missionary challenge of today "is no longer simply to collaborate in the activity of evangelization, but to make people feel that that they are protagonists and share responsibility for the Church's mission.

While you are proclaiming peace with your lips, be careful to have it even more fully in your heart.
    - St. Francis of Assisi

If He who was without sin prayed, how much more ought sinners to pray?
    - St. Cyprian

A man found a cocoon of a butterfly...

by MelanieM on 27th August 2010 at 11:02 AM
A man found a cocoon of a butterfly. One day small opening appeared. He sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to force its body through that little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could, and it could go no further. So the man decided to help the butterfly.

He took a pair of scissors and snipped off the remaining bit of the cocoon. The butterfly then emerged easily. But it had a swollen body

Do it anyway

by MelanieM on 25th August 2010 at 07:15 AM
People are often unreasonable, irrational, and self-centered.
Forgive them anyway.

If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives.
Be kind anyway.

If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and some genuine enemies.
Succeed anyway.

If you are honest and sincere, people may deceive you.
Be honest and sincere anyway.

What you spend years creating, others could destroy overnight.

Love letter from God...an oldie, but a beautiful read :)

by MelanieM on 17th August 2010 at 02:47 PM
Dear Child:

I just wanted to remind you today of how beautiful you are because there is a father of lies who will try to deceive you. He will try to tell you that you are not good enough, not attractive enough, not thin enough, not strong enough, not smart enough, not righteous enough, and that you are simply unimportant to Me.

He will try to tell you that you have broken one too many promises, that you have fallen one too many times, that you have lived one too many

B-eing U-nder S-atan's Y-oke

by MelanieM on 17th August 2010 at 10:34 AM
Satan called a worldwide convention of demons. In his opening address he said, "We can't keep Christians from going to church. We can't keep them from reading their Bibles and knowing the truth. We can't even keep them from forming an intimate relationship with their savior. Once they gain that connection with Jesus, our power over them is broken."

"So let them go to their churches; let them have their covered dish dinners, but steal their time, so they don't have time to develop

I will not sin again...

by MelanieM on 12th August 2010 at 10:31 PM
Q: In the act of contrition after confession I say “and with the help of thy grace I will not sin again”. I have always had a problem with this since I know I will sin again. Sometimes to be safe I say “I will try not to sin again”. What should I say?

A: Your question troubles many people and it is a good time to answer it.

True sorrow for sin, or sorrow for having offended another person for that matter, always implies the determination to try not to do it again.
