Hello Fellow Catholics,
I was having a discussion with a girl and she said there are contradictions in The Bible. I answered her questions but I knew I could have done better on one in particular.
Can someone help me with this?
I was just checking, and although the Old Testament implies an eye for an eye (under circumstances e.g. killing an animal demands restitution) it never says 'AN EYE FOR AN EYE' does it? Are people taking this out of context to create a contradiction?
38 You have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth. 39 But I say to you not to resist evil: but if one strike thee on thy right cheek, turn to him also the other. Matthew 5:38-39
Is it right to argue that Jesus Christ is saying that we should be more forgiving towards our neighbours and not be so quick to punish those who trespass against us? (If we turn the cheek and they strike again.. what do we do then?)
Is it right to say that in the Old Testament, things were very black-and-white, in the sense that if someone committed a crime they would be executed, because humans' minds hadn't evolved to a state of complex trials and reasoning etc?
